Cahill Road gelding scores his second stakes placing of 2009

Alpakapaluza, a 3-year-old son of Cahill Road, posted his second stakes placing at six furlongs on the dirt this year when he finished third to the heavily favored winner Major Temper in the $12,495 B Cup 3 Year Old Colt and Geldings Stakes at Canada's Lethbridge racetrack on October 11.

Making his eighth start since he secured the show spot in the $30,000 Auburn Stakes at Emerald Downs in Washington on April 26, the Jim Depew trainee closed from fourth in the B Cup and briefly took the lead in the stretch, but ultimately gave way and was beaten by 4 3/4 lengths. The 10-1 wagering choice in the field of five sophomores earned $1,499 for owner Jesse Depew. Scott Sterr handled the riding duties.

Alpakapaluza broke his maiden at Emerald Downs in June of his 2-year-old season. He has gone to post 13 times total for one win, five placings and $24,533 in earnings.

Bred in Washington by Dale Mahlum, he is the fifth foal out of the winning Saratoga Six mare Anne O' Keefe, who also produced the dual stakes-placed winner Onehundred Days.

Cahill Road, a Grade 1-winning son of Fappiano, is the sire of 51 stakes performers among his 15 crops of racing age. The 21-year-old full brother to 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Unbridled stands at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, Washington, and is represented by total progeny earnings of more than $19.1 million. - October 11, 2009

Washington champ by Cahill Road repeats in Muckleshoot

Seven-year-old Wasserman, the veteran Cahill Road gelding who took home top honors as Washington's 2008 Horse of the Year, returned to the winner's circle for the first time in almost exactly a year when he successfully defended his title in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic Stakes at Emerald Downs on September 13. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

The Washington-bred warrior, who reigns as the track's all-time leading earner with $498,812 in total purse money accrued from his 39 local starts, had been winless since his neck victory in last year's Muckleshoot, and had gone zero-for-seven in his 2009 outings in Auburn, including six consecutive attempts in stakes company. But the 2008 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) hero was ready to run in the 1 1/16-mile Muckleshoot, which served as the final stakes event on the track's Washington Cup VII program for state-bred runners.

Kept closer to the pace than usual under regular rider Jennifer Whitaker, Wasserman stalked the front-running Scalding Passion from an outside position, then wore down his rival in the waning yards for a 1 1/4-length victory as the 3-5 betting favorite among five entries. His final time was 1:42 - an exact replica of his 2008 clocking in this race.

"He's ridden different every race, and I think he had been storing it up for this one," said Whitaker, who rides the gelding for his breeder, owner and trainer, Howard Belvoir. "When I let him go, he just locked down."

With the win, Wasserman pushed his 47-race earnings to $518,549, thereby becoming the fifth-highest Washington-bred money-winner of all time. His dam is the stakes-placed winner Share the Knight, by Knights Choice.

Canada-based Cahill Road runner gets up for stakes placing

Four-year-old Road Risk was British Columbia-raised and is exclusively British Columbia-raced. The Cahill Road gelding, who was bred in the Canadian province by Canyon Farms, has made all 13 of his starts at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. On August 3, he achieved a career high point when he earned his first stakes placing at his home track. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

Saddled by trainer Robert VanOverschot, Road Risk was partnered with jockey Garry Cruise for the $51,665 British Columbia Cup Sprint Handicap. The team's task in the 6 1/2-furlong dash was made easier when the race came up with only five starters; nonetheless, Road Risk was sent postward with the highest odds, at 10-1.

The confirmed closer broke last from the gate, then brought up the rear of the field for the first half-mile of the contest, traveling no more than five lengths behind the leader at any point. As the group reached the final turn, he rallied three-wide and propelled forward, ultimately getting to the wire a length behind the favored winner, Woombroom Express, and a nose in front of the third-place finisher.

As runner-up, he banked $10,519 to push his total earnings to $73,234. To date, the third foal out of the Ascot Knight mare Gracious Legacy has recorded three wins and five placings for owners Canyon Farms and Carlton Stable.

Cahill Road runner wins Montana stakes, stays perfect in 2009

Out, a 3-year-old son of leading Washington sire Cahill Road, scored his third consecutive win with a facile, gate-to-wire effort in the Treasured State Derby at Great Falls in Montana on July 26, and emerged from the seven-furlong race with his 2009 unbeaten streak intact.

Competing against just three other sophomores in the $3,840 contest, Out quickly distanced himself from the field. Under the direction of regular rider Fernando Gamez, the 6-5 wagering favorite and 127-pound highweight showed his heels every step of the way, eventually drawing off to a 9 1/2-length advantage at the wire, which he reached in 1:31.

The Doug Johnson-trained gelding has made five of his six career starts in Montana. He recorded three placings at Yellowstone Downs as a 2-year-old, then shipped north to Lethbridge in Canada for his 2009 debut on June 26, resulting in a five-length maiden victory. On July 19, he scored by 9 1/2 lengths in allowance company at Great Falls, utilizing the front-running tactics he mirrored seven days later in the Treasured State Derby.

Bred in Washington by owner Jack Goggins, Out was produced by the unraced Four Bases mare Allie Belle. To date, he has banked $7,684.

Grade 1 winner Cahill Road has now sired 50 stakes horses, including 29 stakes winners, and reigns as Washington's leading active sire by lifetime progeny earnings, with more than $18.9 million accrued by his runners. Wasserman, by Cahill Road, scores another stakes placing

On July 5, Cahill Road's multiple Washington champion Wasserman posted the 15th stakes performance of his illustrious career with a third-place finish in the $50,000 Governor's Handicap at Emerald Downs.

The 7-year-old gelding has won five stakes races over the past three seasons, including the most recent edition of his home track's premier event, the Longacres Mile Handicap (G3). In recognition of his accomplishments, he was honored as Washington's Horse of the Year, Champion Handicap Horse and Champion Sprinter for 2008.

Second in the local $50,000 Budweiser Emerald Handicap at one mile on June 21, Wasserman continued to prepare for a repeat bid in the August 16 Longacres Mile with a come-from-behind effort in the 6 1/2-furlong Governor's Handicap, a race which he won in 2007 and 2008. Rallying from last under regular rider Jennifer Whitaker in the six-horse field, the veteran gained steady progress on the leaders in the stretch, but was forced to settle for third at the finish, which he reached less than 1 1/4 lengths behind the front-running winner, Atta Boy Roy.

Bred, owned and trained by Howard Belvoir, Wasserman was produced by the stakes-placed winner Share the Knight, by Knights Choice. He is now the 10th leading Washington-bred money-winner of all time, with earnings of $470,899 garnered from his lifetime record of 44-9-10-7.

Cahill Road, a Grade 1-winning full sibling to 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Unbridled, is Washington's leading active lifetime sire, with total progeny earnings of more than $18.8 million to his credit. Cahill Road's Washington champ second-best in Budweiser

The veteran campaigner Wasserman, a 7-year-old son of Cahill Road and Washington's reigning Horse of the Year, took another positive step toward defending his title in Emerald Downs' $300,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) with a fast-closing second in the track's $50,000 Budweiser Emerald Handicap on June 21.

A nine-time winner and $463,399-earner from 43 lifetime starts, Wasserman ranks as his sire's second-highest career money-winner, thanks in large part to his strong closing kick, which was once again on display in his most recent race. He was also assisted by regular rider Jennifer Whitaker, who made history when she became the first female jockey to win the prestigious Longacres Mile in its 73rd edition aboard the classy gelding last August.

In the one-mile Budweiser, which attracted eight starters, Wasserman sat behind horses in seventh, advanced from the outside through the turn and responded eagerly to Whitaker's steady urging in the stretch. He narrowed the distance between himself and his winning stablemate, Assessment, until just a neck separated them at the wire.

Wasserman collected $10,000 for his runner-up effort, bringing his Emerald Downs bankroll to a record $443,662. He was bred in Washington by his trainer and owner, Howard Belvoir, and produced by Share the Knight, a stakes-placed winner by Knights Choice.

With lifetime progeny earnings of more than $18.8 million, Cahill Road reigns as Washington's leading active lifetime sire. The 21-year-old son of Fappiano, winner of the 1991 Wood Memorial Invitational Stakes (G1), stands at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw. - June 21, 2009

Champion son of Cahill Road adds to his lengthy stakes record

The veteran gelding Wasserman, a son of Cahill Road who was honored as Washington's 2008 Horse of the Year, Champion Handicap Horse and Champion Sprinter, added an eighth stakes placing to his enviable lifetime record while attempting to defend his title in the $50,000 Fox Sports Network Handicap at Emerald Downs on May 25.

Winner of the track's most prestigious annual event, the $272,500 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) last August, Wasserman was reunited with his regular rider, Jennifer Whitaker, for the 6 1/2-furlong Fox Sports Network, a race he won by a head last year. The familiarity of horse and jockey worked in their favor, as the duo closed confidently from last in the 10-horse field to third in a strong stretch rally, finishing 1 3/4 diminishing lengths behind the winning favorite, Kruger Park.

Seven-year-old Wasserman was bred in the Evergreen State by his owner and trainer, Howard Belvoir, and has made 27 consecutive appearances at Emerald Downs. The five-time stakes victor was produced by the stakes-placed winner Share the Knight, by Knights Choice.

From 42 trips postward, Wasserman has banked $453,399, with nine wins, nine seconds and six thirds to his credit.
