Nitro Active, by Capsized, steps up with Del Mar stakes placing

Facing a salty group of eight fellow California-breds whose combined earnings totaled more than $2.6 million, the 12-1 longshot - and second-lowest lifetime earner in the field - Nitro Active became the first black-type offspring for his sire, Capsized, when he outran all but one of those contenders in the grassy, $100,000 California Dreamin' Handicap at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on July 26.

The 4-year-old gelding, who was making his Del Mar debut following a Hollywood Park season which yielded a first, a second and a third from three starts in turf allowance company, transferred his current form south to the seaside track. He stalked the pace under jockey Victor Espinoza while tucked along the rail in third throughout most of the 1 1/16-mile test, then employed a late kick that propelled him to second at the wire. He finished three-quarters of a length behind the 3-1 winner, Dewey's Special.

Trained by Mike Machowsky, Nitro Active banked $20,000 for the effort to bring his 13-race earnings to $129,812 for owners Flintridge Stable, Decker Racing and Venneri Racing. His overall record features three wins and six placings.

Nitro Active was bred by B n D Chase Thoroughbreds Inc. He is the ninth and final foal out of the unraced Pirate's Bounty mare That's Mine, the dam of two other stakes-placed performers.

Third-crop sire Capsized, a Grade 3 winner who placed in four additional graded events on dirt and turf, has collective progeny earnings of more than $740,000. The 13-year-old Summer Squall stallion stands at Oak Hill Farm in Paso Robles, California. - July 26, 2009

Capsized gelding overcomes trouble in Hollywood allowance

The official chart comments for Hollywood Park allowance winner Nitro Active tell the tale of the Capsized gelding's hard-fought victory on June 4: "Nitro Active saved ground stalking the pace, waited in upper stretch, steadied when blocked off heels in midstretch, split foes in deep stretch and surged inside under some left-handed urging to get up."

A 4-year-old gelding from his sire's first crop of runners, Nitro Active was winless in seven starts since February 2008, when he had captured a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming contest on the all-weather racing surface at Santa Anita Park. But the Mike Machowsky trainee had signaled a return to form in his three starts from February 2009 through May 2009, when he was switched to the turf. In those recent Hollywood and Santa Anita routes, he nabbed two seconds and a third with a combined losing margin of less than two lengths.

Kept on the lawn for his June 4 attempt, Nitro Active also attained the services of jockey Joel Rosario for the first time in his 11-start career. The result was a half-length victory in 1:35.08 as the 7-5 favorite, as well as a $30,000 addendum to his lifetime bankroll.

The California-bred gelding, who was produced by the unraced Pirate's Bounty mare That's Mine and bred by B n D Chase Thoroughbreds Inc., now competes for the ownership group of Flintridge Stable, Decker Racing and Venneri Racing. At $102,012, he is the chief earner for his sire.

Capsized, 13, stands at Oak Hill Farm in Paso Robles, California. From three crops of racing age, the Grade 3-winning son of Summer Squall has achieved progeny earnings of more than $670,000 to date. - June 4, 2009

Capsized filly continues to thrive at Portland Meadows

Three-year-old Maxie's Night Cap continued to thrive in her new surroundings on December 30, when she won another sprint race at damp Portland Meadows to seal her status as the highest-earning daughter of the California stallion Capsized.

Since being transferred from Emerald Downs to Portland Meadows in early October, Maxie's Night Cap has reeled off four victories and two placings from six starts. Three of those wins came over a sloppy track.

The Oregon-bred filly found the wet fast conditions on December 30 to her liking as well. Sent postward as the 2-1 mild favorite under Javier Matias, she raced just off the leaders early and edged clear on the outside in late stretch to post a one-length score in the 5 1/2-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares aged 3 and up. Clocked in 1:06.07, she increased her 18-race bankroll to $44,672, with seven wins and six placings to her overall credit.

Maxie's Night Cap was bred by Dr. and Mrs. Jack B. Root Jr., and was produced by the winning Society Max mare Maximum Effort. She is trained by David Runyon, who owns her in partnership with Patricia Runyon.

Capsized filly captures Portland Meadows starter handicap

On December 7, the California-based second-crop sire Capsized was further flattered by his improving daughter Maxie's Night Cap, a 3-year-old filly who won the sixth race of her 17-start career, and her third since being transferred from Emerald Downs to Portland Meadows two months ago.

A young veteran of claiming races, mostly in the $7,500 and under level, Maxie's Night Cap defeated four rivals, including three of her elders, in the $8,700 starter handicap, which was contested at six furlongs in sloppy conditions. Installed as the 11-10 favorite under Javier Matias, she jumped first from the gate and led at every call of the restricted race, extending her winning margin to two lengths in a final time of 1:12.03.

The $42,087-earner has flourished in her new surroundings, with three victories, a second and a third from five starts at the Oregon oval, where she was relocated in early October. She was bred in the state by Dr. and Mrs. Jack B. Root Jr., and is currently conditioned by David Runyon, who owns her in partnership with Patricia Runyon.

Maxie's Night Cap is out of the winning Society Max mare Maximum Effort, and was sired by 12-year-old Capsized. The Grade 3 winner by Summer Squall stands at Oak Hill Farm in Paso Robles, California, and is represented by cumulative progeny earnings of $495,856 to date. - December 7, 2008

Juvenile Capsized filly wires Golden Gate starter allowance

Two-year-old Adriftinthebay, a daughter of California second-crop sire Capsized, became a repeat winner on November 29, when she led at every call and captured a $20,900 starter allowance at Golden Gate Fields.

Saddled by Gil Matos and ridden by Juan Ochoa, the California-bred filly jumped quickest from the gate and kept a one-length advantage throughout the mile contest, effectively controlling the pace and easily extending her margin of victory to two lengths at the wire in a final time of 1:40.43. As the first foal out of the winning Septieme Ciel mare Ecstatic One, she has now won two of six starts, with three placings, and banked $32,440.

Adriftinthebay was bred by Lori Sala and is campaigned by M.A. Douzos and Ron Stolich.

Grade 3 winner Capsized, a 12-year-old son of Summer Squall, will stand the 2009 breeding season at Oak Hill Farm in Paso Robles, California. He is quickly approaching the $500,000 mark in cumulative progeny earnings from his two crops to race. - November 29, 2008

Sophomore Capsized filly chalks up fifth lifetime win

Maxie's Night Cap, a 3-year-old daughter of the California-based stallion Capsized, collected her fifth lifetime victory on November 10, when she drew off to a 2 1/2-length score in a six-furlong sprint at muddy Portland Meadows.

Sent postward as the 2-1 favorite under Javier Matias, Maxie's Night Cap took advantage of her 119-pound impost, the lowest in the field of eight fillies and mares, and her early running position to wrest command of the $3,200 claiming contest just a half-mile in. She extended her winning margin over her elders at the wire, bringing her lifetime bankroll to $36,362.

The Oregon-bred filly, who has won or placed in 10 of 15 starts, is trained by David Runyon for himself and Patricia Runyon. She passed her latest test on the heels of a third-place finish in Portland Meadows' $9,500 Invitational Handicap for sophomore fillies on October 19. She was bred by Dr. and Mrs. Jack B. Root Jr. and is out of the winning Society Max mare Maximum Effort.

Maxie's Night Cap hails from the debut crop of Capsized, a graded stakes-winning son of Summer Squall who is among California's leading second-crop sires of 2008. The 12-year-old stallion stood the 2008 breeding season at Eagle Oak Ranch in Paso Robles, California, and has attained progeny earnings of $466,293. - November 10, 2008
