Cascadian sophomore places in Portland Meadows stakes

On January 19, the Oregon-based sire Cascadian was represented by the runner-up in Portland Meadows' OTBA Stallion Stakes: his sophomore son Mazama.

Making his fourth career start, and first outing of 2009, in the six-furlong dash, Mazama was saddled by Vannessa Hunt and ridden for the first time by J. Luis Torres in the restricted race, which carried a total value of $17,350. He raced in second throughout, and successfully held off a late challenge from the third-place finisher as the five-horse field approached the wire. Mazama concluded the race three lengths behind the winner, Ex Tremely Cool, who stopped the clock in 1:12.35.

As the second foal out of the unraced Lil E. Tee mare Little Mary R. N., Mazama has placed in half of his four starts to date and earned $7,528. The Oregon-bred gelding ran third to eventual state champion juvenile Chief Jafatica in Portland Meadows' $21,250 Bill Wineberg Stakes last November. He was bred by Patricia Ruth Paulson, Kenneth Paulson and Bar C Racing Stables, and currently races for D. Benson, E. Hagen, I. Standley, R. Sutton and V. Hunt.

Thirteen-year-old Cascadian, a Seattle Slew half-brother to the Grade 1-winning millionaire and sire Blushing John, stands at Bar C Racing Stables in Hermiston, Oregon. He is represented by lifetime progeny earnings of more than $600,000, as well as two Oregon juvenile champions. - January 19, 2009

Cascadian runner steals the show on Oregon Championship Day

Oregon's richest race of 2008 fell to 5-1 outsider Beacon Rock, a 2-year-old son of Cascadian who broke his maiden in the restricted, $41,600 Os West Oregon Futurity at Portland Meadows on December 7.

Billed as Oregon Championship Day, an event dedicated to honoring state-bred runners, the daylong celebration was met with rain showers, but climaxed with Beacon Rock's shining, 3 3/4-length score in the one-mile Os West, which attracted six starters. Leading local jockey Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo, who rode three winners on the card, got the gelding away early and patiently sat several lengths behind the pacesetter in second position through the first six furlongs of the race. In late stretch, the gelding responded to her urging and surged ahead of the tiring leader for a widening victory on the sloppy track, stopping the timer in 1:42.98. The third-place finisher was six lengths behind the runner-up, yet more than 11 lengths ahead of the fourth-place runner in the strung-out field.

Trained by his owner, Nick Lowe, Beacon Rock has won one of three starts and collected $24,474. He is out of the Hold Your Peace mare Newbury Street, a nine-time winner from 68 trips postward, and was bred by Lowe in partnership with Meg Brinton, DVM.

Twelve-year-old Cascadian, an unraced son of Seattle Slew who counts the Grade 1-winning millionaire and prominent sire Blushing John among his seven stakes-caliber siblings, resides at Bar C Racing Stables in Hermiston, Oregon. From 47 starters, he has sired 30 winners and 14 stakes horses, and the collective earners of more than $560,000. - December 7, 2008
