First-crop Defy Logic filly outruns eight rivals at Del Mar
In 2004, Defy Logic won a pair of sprints at 5 1/2 furlongs and six furlongs; five years later, his first-crop daughter Bettyboomboom accomplished the same feat to become the young stallion's highest earner.
Making the eighth start of her career in a six-furlong claiming race at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on August 6, Bettyboomboom outran eight contenders to capture her second lifetime victory. The 3-year-old filly, who established herself as her sire's initial winner in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden romp at Santa Anita Park last January, elevated her overall bankroll to $34,720 with the achievement.
She was paired for the first time with jockey Alonso Quinonez for her Del Mar debut, and she did not disappoint either her backers, who were rewarded with an $11.40 win payoff, or her ownership group of Alesia, Bran Jam Stable, Westerlund, et al. Assigned top weight of 122 pounds while running for a $12,500 claiming tag, Bettyboomboom stalked the pace from three-deep on the backstretch and into the turn, made her move at the top of the lane and eventually reached the wire in 1:11.48 as a 1 1/4-length winner on the Polytrack all-weather surface.
The California-bred filly was produced by the winning High Brite mare Brite Betty, and bred by Frank Alesia and Bran Jam Stables. She is trained by Peter Eurton.

Santa Anita runner becomes first repeat winner for Defy Logic
Following a brief experiment at stretching out, California-bred Defying Logic returned to his favorite distance on April 9, and became the first repeat winner for his sire, Defy Logic, in the process.
The 3-year-old gelding, who broke his maiden in a 6 1/2-furlong race at Santa Anita Park on January 30, was next tried in a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming event at the Arcadia track on March 1. Facing winners for the first time, Defying Logic pushed the pace but ultimately tired to fourth. He would achieve better results back at 6 1/2 furlongs in his next outing, nearly six weeks later.
Partnered with jockey Octavio Vergara, who has ridden the gelding in all five of his starts, Defying Logic prompted the pace three deep in the $25,000 claiming race, took the lead past the eighth pole and responded to Vergara's urging by posting a game nose victory in 1:17.05. The Jerry Fanning trainee collected $15,000 for his winning effort as the 4-1 third choice among six wagering interests, and pushed his early bankroll to $29,740 to become his sire's leading earner.
Defying Logic was produced by Moscow Ballet's Grade 2-placed stakes winner Ballerina Gal, and was bred by his owners, the Fanning Family Trust and John R. Harrison.

Second-crop sire Defy Logic notches another maiden winner
Only eight days after he was represented by his first winner, the California second-crop sire Defy Logic experienced additional success at Santa Anita Park, when his son Defying Logic captured a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race over seven rivals on January 30.
A 3-year-old gelding who races as a homebred for the Fanning Family Trust and John R. Harrison, Defying Logic entered the $32,000 claiming match off two previous starts. Last November, he ran a close third in a 5 1/2-furlong race at Hollywood Park, followed by a troubled, 10th-place effort in a six-furlong race at Santa Anita which was contested, like his first outing, at the same $40,000 maiden claiming conditions for California-bred runners.
Handicappers were not dismayed by his recent poor performance, and installed Defying Logic as the 8-1 fourth wagering choice after he posted a bullet five-furlong work at Santa Anita on January 25 - the fastest of 75 moves at the distance. Facing open company under Octavio Vergara, the Jerry Fanning trainee tracked the early leaders in fourth and got up between horses late to post a half-length victory on Pro-Ride in 1:16.85 and push his three-race earnings to $13,360.
Defying Logic is out of the Moscow Ballet mare Ballerina Gal, a Grade 2-placed stakes winner who banked $347,825 during the mid-1990s.

Defy Logic's first winner defeats 10 rivals in Santa Anita romp
The young California stallion Defy Logic was represented by his initial winner as a sire on January 22, when his first-crop daughter Bettyboomboom defeated 10 rivals in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden test at Santa Anita Park.
Saddled by Peter Eurton for the ownership group of Alesia, Bran Jam Stable, Westerlund, et al, 3-year-old Bettyboomboom dueled for the lead three-wide in the early stages of the restricted, $40,000 claiming event for non-winners, took command at the top of the stretch and drew away for a four-length score in 1:03.50 on the Pro-Ride surface. The California-bred filly earned $12,600 under Michael Baze, who had ridden her to a pair of fourth-place finishes and one second-place effort in her first three career starts last fall at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.
Bettyboomboom is the first foal out of Brite Betty, a winning High Brite mare whose dam is a full sister to 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow and three other major stakes winners. She was bred by Frank Alesia and Bran Jam Stables, and has now banked $20,220.
