California sire Flame Thrower attains first stakes winner
Multiple graded stakes winner Flame Thrower was represented by his first black-type winner as a sire on December 20, when his daughter Leigh McLovin dominated the $60,000 Letellier Memorial Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at historic Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Trained by Ronny Werner and piloted by Robby Albarado, the Florida-bred filly broke tardily from the gate, but quickly made amends by pushing to a 1 1/2-length lead at the opening quarter-mile mark, which she reached in a brisk :21.80. She maintained her front-running position throughout the remainder of the six-furlong test, then drew away in the stretch for a facile, four-length victory over five contenders. The final time for the winning 9-5 favorite was 1:10.47.
Produced by the unraced Dr. Caton mare Doc's Stormy Girl, Leigh McLovin was bred by Kristine Mitchell. To date, she has won two of three starts, with one runner-up finish, and banked $69,080 for McKathan Brothers Farm.
Flame Thrower, a 10-year-old son of Saint Ballado, won the Grade 2 Del Mar Futurity, Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes and Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes as a juvenile while racing on the competitive Southern California circuit. The $458,200-earner currently stands at Oak Hill Farm in Paso Robles, California, and is represented by cumulative progeny earnings of more than $2.2 million from his first four crops to race. - December 20, 2008
