Flame Thrower finished that season with four wins in five starts and earnings of $388,200. He continued his success into his sophomore season, finishing second in his only two starts, in the Grade 2 Riva Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park and against older horses in the Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap at Pimlico. 

Flame Thrower was retired after finishing second by a neck in the Riva Ridge Stakes with a record of four wins and two seconds in seven starts for earnings of $458,200--an average of $65,457 per start. After winning a maiden special weight race at Del Mar in his first start, he raced in nothing but graded stakes for the rest of his career.
