Saint Ballado – Metromane, by Metrogrand
Chestnut • 1998
A Multiple Graded Stakes Winner
In Southern California At 2
Progeny Earnings More Than $2.5 Million
Sire Of More Than 60 Winners,
Including 2008 2YO Stakes Winner Leigh McLovin
Flame Thrower enjoyed
one of the greatest 2-year-old seasons in California history when he won
the first four starts of his career, following a maiden win with consecutive
victories in the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes and the Grade 2 Del Mar Futurity
at Del Mar and the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita. He suffered the
only defeat of his 2-year-old season when he was unplaced in the Grade
1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Stakes.
Flame Thrower finished
that season with four wins in five starts and earnings of $388,200. He
continued his success into his sophomore season, finishing second in his
only two starts, in the Grade 2 Riva Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park and against
older horses in the Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap at Pimlico.
Flame Thrower was
retired after finishing second by a neck in the Riva Ridge Stakes with
a record of four wins and two seconds in seven starts for earnings of $458,200--an
average of $65,457 per start. After winning a maiden special weight race
at Del Mar in his first start, he raced in nothing but graded stakes for
the rest of his career.
Flame Thrower recorded
Equibase Speed Figures above 100 in every one of his starts--102, 103,
104, 113, 113, 114, and 121. He won at distances from six furlongs to one
mile.
Flame Thrower, out of a stakes-winning mare, carries on the sire line of the ill-fated Saint Ballado, sire of 64 stakes winners before his early death at the age of 13. His runners include Horse of the Year Saint Liam ($4,456,995), two-time champion Ashado ($3,931,440), and Grade 1 winner Captain Bodgit ($1,014,849).
Flame Thrower has five crops of racing age. To date, he has sired 66 winners, including four stakes horses, as well as two earners of more than $200,000 each and two additional earners of more than $100,000 each. His daughter Leigh McLovin was a dominating, four-length winner of Fair Grounds’ 2008 Letellier Memorial Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. His overall progeny earnings are more than $2.5 million.
