Free At Last sophomore earns stakes placing in Northern California
Free Action, a Washington-bred son of the veteran sire Free At Last, fell just a length shy of keeping his career record perfect on January 1, when he ran a game second in his first stakes attempt.
The 3-year-old gelding broke his maiden in $20,000 claiming company at Emerald Downs last June, then shipped south to Golden Gate Fields, where he won a six-furlong allowance test on the Tapeta all-weather surface in mid-November. He was kept at the latter track and distance for his black-type debut in his third outing, the $75,000 Golden Bear Stakes on New Year's Day.
Saddled by Bud Klokstad and ridden by Leslie Mawing, Free Action lingered in back of the five-horse field for the early portion of the race, angled out four-wide in the turn and rallied in the stretch to get up for the place behind the highly regarded winner, Backbackbackgone. He outran his 13-1 odds to collect a $15,000 paycheck, bringing his three-race bankroll to $33,000.
Free Action is out of No Lost Action, by Wander Kind, and was bred by Carol Kingston. A $12,000 graduate of the 2007 Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association Summer Yearling Sale, he currently races for Billie Klokstad.
Multiple Grade 3 winner Free At Last resides at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, Washington. The 20-year-old Wild Again stallion, who was Canada's champion juvenile colt in 1991, has sired 53 stakes horses and the cumulative earners of more than $8.9 million to date. - January 1, 2009
