Aussie daughter of Good Journey places in homeland stakes
Night at the Opera (Aus), a filly from the second Southern Hemisphere crop of California/Australia shuttle stallion Good Journey, added black type to her racing credentials on July 11, when she ran third in the listed WATC Belmont Classic at Belmont Racecourse, one of the two major tracks in the Western Australia city of Perth.
The 3-year-old runner, who broke her maiden across town at Ascot Racecourse on May 2, was making her fifth consecutive start at the venue. Facing 11 rival sophomore fillies, Night at the Opera was sent off at odds of 6-1 with jockey Daniel Staeck in the irons for the 2,200-meter (1 3/8-mile) turf test, while toting 54 kilograms (119 pounds). After running in seventh position early, she moved up in the latter stages and ultimately finished three-quarters of a length behind the winner, Mega Steel, who posted a final time of 2:17.49 on a surface listed as good.
Bred in New South Wales by The Written Bloodstock and purchased by John Chalmers Bloodstock for AUS$5,500 at the 2006 Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale, Night at the Opera has won one of 10 starts, with four placings, and earned AUS$57,750 to date for owner R.G. Quenby's Oakland Park Stud. She was produced by the Masterclass mare Written By A Queen (NZ), and is currently trained by Fred Kersley.
Grade 1 winner Good Journey, a half-brother to 2003 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Aldebaran, is represented by cumulative progeny earnings of more than $1 million from his first three crops of racing age, which he sired in Australia. The 13-year-old Nureyev stallion holds court during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California. His first North American crop will race in 2010. - July 11, 2009
Good Journey colt runs second in Australia stakes
Group 2 winner Sound Journey (Aus), a colt from the first crop of California/Australia shuttle stallion Good Journey, just missed capturing the second stakes trophy of his career on March 28, when he ran second by a nose in the AUS$100,500 Programmed Maintenance Services Anniversary Vase at Caulfield in Melbourne, Australia.
Installed at odds of 6-1 as the youngest male in the 14-horse race, 4-year-old Sound Journey received the services of jockey Ibrahim Gundogdu and lost by a head-bob to Skiddaw Peak in the 1,400-meter turf race. The final time was 1:23.99.
Sound Journey is trained by Mark Kavanagh on behalf of a 10-member ownership group. He has collected four wins and two placings to date for earnings of $181,932.
The colt, who is out of the O'Reilly (NZ) mare Written By Sound (NZ), was bred by The Written Bloodstock in New South Wales. He embarked on his career with great promise when he won his first three races in September and October 2007, then captured the 1,600-meter Alister Clark Stakes (G2) at Moonee Valley in February 2008 while posting a final time that was only .02 off the track record.
Good Journey, a Grade 1 winner and $1.7-million earner, entered stud in Australia in 2003, and began shuttling to Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, California, prior to the 2007 Northern Hemisphere breeding season. The 9-year-old son of Nureyev out of European champion Chimes of Freedom is represented by two group winners among his Australian contingent; his first U.S.-conceived foals are yearlings of 2009. - March 28, 2009
