HELMSMAN, bay, 1992, by El Gran Senor--Sacred Journey, by King's Bishop.

Champion Grade 1-Winning Millionaire From a Legendary
Sire Line Is Siring Quality
Runners That Are Sound

Helmsman launched his sire career impressively, and he's continued that success through his first seven crops to reach the races. He was California's leading freshman sire of 2001 by a wide margin with progeny earnings of $532,923, more than twice the total of the runnerup sire. That crop included Rare Friends, Canadian champion 2-year-old colt, whose earnings now total $766,123.

Helmsman has sired 143 winners of over $9,700,000, with 16 stakes horses, including earners of $772,916, $494,116, $328,46, $326,647 and $239,586. Twenty-eight of his runners have earned more than $100,000 each. Seven have earned more than $200,000. His runners earned more than $1,700,000 in 2006 alone.

Helmsman sires runners of remarkable soundness. Of 103 starters from his first three crops--including 5-year-olds of 2006--no fewer than 62 have started 20 times or more. Those runners' career starts include these totals: 68, 61, 56, 55, 54, 53, and 52. Another 12 have started 40 or more times, another 20 have started 30 or more times. In these times of unsound horses, those are astonishing numbers.

Helmsman was the high-weighted colt on the Irish Free Handicap at 2, continuing the championship legacy of his distinguished sire line. His sire, El Gran Senor, was himself four times a champion and sired seven champions among his 53 stakes winners.

Won six races and $1,133,520 in four seasons on both dirt and grass in four countries--England, Ireland, Canada, and the United States--from six furlongs to the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles.

Won the Grade 1 Strub Stakes and two other graded stakes and placed in seven other graded stakes, three of them Grade 1. In all, he won or placed in 13 stakes races in 22 starts.

Defeated the best of the best, including Gentlemen (Arg), Dare and Go, Afternoon Deelites, Tinners Way, Da Hoss, Mr Purple, and many others. He defeated 68 stakes winners and seven champions.

Helmsman stands at Windfall Farms, Paso Robles, Calif. His stud fee is $4,000, live foal.
