Bestdressed, by Lit de Justice, rallies for third in Cal Cup Sprint

Moving widest of all in a seven-horse field, the Lit de Justice gelding Bestdressed rallied with a rush in the final furlong to secure third in the $100,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint Handicap on October 3. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

The 5-year-old veteran, whose most recent victory came in a $40,000 claiming race at Santa Anita Park last February, returned to the six-furlong distance of that race for his 12-1 attempt at the Cal Cup Sprint, an event which was conducted by the Oak Tree Racing Association as part of the 20th annual California Cup program. Toting the lowest weight, at 116 pounds, Bestdressed was partnered with jockey Alonso Quinonez for his 36th lifetime start.

After breaking second from the gate, Quinonez kept his mount in reserve for most of the race, running in sixth as much as 10 lengths behind the dueling pacesetters. Although Bestdressed was no match for the speedy front-runners, who ultimately completed the exacta, he finished best of the rest with a strong stretch run from an outside path and reached the wire less than two lengths behind the winner, Dancing in Silks.

Bestdressed is trained by John Sadler for Great Friends Stable, and has banked $277,523 overall. The 2008 Barretts Stakes winner was bred in California by Paul Boghossian and produced by the winning Black Tie Affair (Ire) mare Undressed.

Nineteen-year-old Lit de Justice, by El Gran Senor, won the 1996 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). The Magali Farms resident has 44 stakes horses and progeny earnings of more than $19.3 million to his credit. - October 3, 2009

Lit de Justice veteran rallies for Fairplex stakes win

Displaying his affinity for the five-furlong dirt oval at Fairplex Park, where he has now won or placed in five of his six local starts, the Lit de Justice gelding Lit'sgoodlookngray scored the first stakes win of his four-year career in the $50,000 Governor's Cup Handicap on September 23. The victory marked the latest in a series of solid efforts by the 5-year-old veteran at the Pomona bullring, which hosts a short race meet at the conclusion of every summer. At 2, he ran third in the track's $131,600 Barretts Juvenile Stakes; the following season, he repeated that effort with another third in the $64,350 Foothill Stakes.

Paired with jockey Agapito Delgadillo for the 6 1/2-furlong Governor's Cup, Lit'sgoodlookngray settled into a ground-saving position along the rail in fifth as the six-horse field passed the Fairplex grandstand for the first time. After moving up in the backstretch, the California-bred angled out past the two leaders in the final stages and powered to the wire a 1 3/4-length winner in 1:16.68 at odds of 6-1. He pocketed $30,000 for his inaugural stakes score and seventh win overall to push his 33-race bankroll to $350,112.

The first foal out of Souvenir Copy's unraced daughter Color Collection is trained by Bob Hess Jr. for owners Arzola and Huarte, who claimed him for $50,000 out of his prior start at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on August 22. He was bred by Pablo and Michelle Suarez.

Lit de Justice gelding steps up with inaugural stakes placing

Handling a promotion to stakes company for the first time in his 18-race career with aplomb, the Canada-based Lit de Justice gelding Gather de Justice nearly took home the trophy for the $50,455 Richmond Derby Trial Handicap at Hastings Race Course on September 7, but was forced to settle for a narrow second in the end. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

A 3-year-old runner who was claimed for $16,000 at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California last January and subsequently transferred to the Vancouver oval, Gather de Justice entered the race on the heels of three consecutive local wins for trainer Troy Taylor, each at claiming levels varying from $12,500 to $35,000. Fortunately for owners Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella, he was not haltered by any of their peers, and was sent postward for his 1 1/16-mile black-type debut in the Richmond Derby Trial as the 6-1 third wagering choice in a field of 10 sophomores.

Under jockey Mario Gutierrez, Gather de Justice broke eighth from the gate and remained content in that running position as he loped past the grandstand for the first time from an outside path. But as the horses entered the stretch for the second and final time, the California-bred gelding rallied willingly and passed all of his rivals except one, the 29-1 surprise winner Ganbei, whom he got within a neck of defeating with his late-charging effort as the runner-up.

Gather de Justice was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, and has earned $87,100 to date. Produced by the Nashwan mare Gather the Group, the seven-time winner is a half-brother to dual stakes winner Gn. Group Meeting.

Canterbury Park runner is Lit de Justice's 20th stakes winner

The veteran California sire Lit de Justice was credited with his 20th lifetime stakes winner when Minnesota-bred Joni's Justice led every step of the way in his home state's $50,000 Blair's Cove Stakes at Canterbury Park on July 3.

A 6-year-old turf specialist, Joni's Justice got up for second in the restricted, 1 1/16-mile grass test last year. In the 2009 edition, he dictated the pace while setting fractions of :25.33, :50.57, 1:15.24 and 1:38.82 and ultimately secured the $30,000 winner's purse at odds of 5-2 when he successfully held off his toughest challenger by a head in a final time of 1:44.60.

All four of the 21-time starter's career wins have been attained at Canterbury. He has placed an additional nine times overall, including three times in stakes company, and compiled $116,858 in total earnings.

Produced by the winning Reprimand (GB) mare Love Again (GB), Joni's Justice is campaigned by his breeder, Barry Butzow, in partnership with co-owner Joni Butzow. He is trained by McLean Robertson and was ridden to his initial stakes victory by Dean Butler.

Pair of Lit de Justice runners place in Hollywood stakes events

A pair of runners by the veteran California stallion Lit de Justice flattered their sire with on-the-board finishes during Hollywood Park's all-stakes, 10th annual Hollywood Gold Rush program for state-breds on April 25.

Gambler's Justice, a Fairplex Park stakes winner last September, jumped out to an early, three-length lead under Joe Talamo in the $150,000 B. Thoughtful Stakes for older fillies and mares, but was outkicked late by Waveline, who ultimately won the seven-furlong Cushion Track race by 1 1/4 lengths. Gambler's Justice earned $30,000 for her runner-up effort to push her career bankroll to $204,324.

The 4-year-old filly, who was bred by Suarez Racing Inc. and produced by the unraced Diesis (GB) mare Monte Carlo Miss, has won three of 15 starts overall, with six placings. She is trained by Bill Spawr for Halo Farms and Martin Mueller.

Three hours after Gambler's Justice added more black type to her credentials, the 5-year-old gelding Bestdressed, whose most recent stakes success was 11 races and 12 months ago, when he captured the $70,000 Barretts Stakes on the 2008 Hollywood Gold Rush undercard, rallied from last to third in the nine-horse, $150,000 Tiznow Stakes, which was won by Liberian Freighter.

Saddled by Jack Carava and ridden by Joel Rosario for La Canada Stables LLC, Bestdressed entered the 7 1/2-furlong Tiznow off his come-from-behind victory in a $40,000 claiming event at Santa Anita Park in late February. From 30 lifetime starts, he has won five races and placed in 11 others, and earned $222,093.

Bestdressed is out of the winning Black Tie Affair (Ire) mare Undressed, and was bred by Paul Boghossian.

Lit de Justice mare holds on for Santa Anita stakes placing

Making the first start of her 4-year-old campaign, 2008 stakes winner Gambler's Justice, by Lit de Justice, led for most of the way before faltering late in the $100,000 Valentine Dancer Handicap at Santa Anita Park on February 21.

Ridden by Joseph Talamo for trainer William Spawr, Gambler's Justice broke from the outside post and sped to the early lead of the one-mile turf race, which was contested by nine California-bred fillies and mares aged 4 and up. After setting fractions of :22.83, :47.58, 1:12.63 and 1:24.62, the gray filly reluctantly gave way in the final strides to closers Bel Air Sizzle and Onebadkitty, who eventually dead-heated for the victory 1 1/4 lengths in front of her.

While rewarding her backers with a $10.20 show payoff, Gambler's Justice improved her own lifetime record to three wins, a second and four thirds from 13 starts, for earnings of $171,824. Her biggest score to date came in the restricted, $65,000 CTBA Marian Stakes at Fairplex Park last September.

Gambler's Justice was bred by Suarez Racing Inc., and is currently campaigned by Halo Farms and Martin Mueller. She is out of the unraced Diesis (GB) mare Monte Carlo Miss.

Lit de Justice filly caps star-crossed year with stakes placing

It has been a roller-coaster season for Gambler's Justice, a 3-year-old daughter of California stallion Lit de Justice who has gone from a maiden winner to a stakes-winning earner of $159,824 during her 10-race 2008 campaign.

Bred in California by Suarez Racing Inc. and produced by the unraced Diesis (GB) mare Monte Carlo Miss, Gambler's Justice started the year with successive victories in a $50,000 maiden special weight race and a $52,000 allowance race, with both sprints carded for state-breds over Santa Anita Park's former Cushion Track surface.

Her next four races did not produce the desired results for trainer William Spawr. Sixth in a one-mile turf allowance, she next reached the wire first in Hollywood's $200,000 Melair Stakes for state-breds, but she was disqualified for interference in that 1 1/16-mile Cushion Track contest and placed third. Fifth in her next two stakes outings and third in a Del Mar optional claiming event on Polytrack, Gambler's Justice finally earned her first stakes trophy with a clear victory over her fellow state-breds in the $65,000 CTBA Marian Stakes on the Fairplex Park dirt in September.

She ran fourth in a subsequent open stakes race at Hollywood, but improved to third in the track's restricted, $77,225 Cat's Cradle Handicap on December 20, finishing a neck behind the winner, California champion Bai and Bai, under Martin Pedroza. Overall, she has won three of 12 starts, with four placings, for Halo Farms and Allen Magerman.
