MAKALEHA offers Oregon breeders a powerful combination of classic bloodlines, consistent athletic ability and high-percentage progeny statistics.
MAKALEHA carries a pedigree that reads like a who's who of the American Stud Book, with the legendary stallions Nasrullah, Nearco, Princequillo and Round Table on his sire's side and Drone, Princequillo, Sir Gaylord and Tom Fool on his dam's side. He represents one of the few remaining opportunities to tap into these time-tested bloodlines.
MAKALEHA was a classy, consistent performer on the racetrack. Competing exclusively on the tough California circuit, he won or placed in 22 of his 27 lifetime starts from the ages of 2 to 5. Among his achievements were six stakes wins and 11 stakes placings, as well as a track record-setting performance of 1:33.70 for one mile at Sacramento which he set in 1991, and which still stands to this day. He exhibited his precocity by winning his debut race at 2 by 10 lengths, and his versatility by winning on dirt and turf from the distances of five furlongs to 1 1/8 miles over the next three seasons. He retired with total earnings of $234,135.
MAKALEHA is by Never Tabled, a grandson of Nasrullah and the sire of 25 stakes winners, as well as the Grade 1-producing California stallion Smokester. His dam is by the leading broodmare sire Drone, whose daughters have produced such notable runners as 1999 Horse of the Year Charismatic, 1996 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Grindstone and the multiple Grade/Group 1-winning champions Dancing Brave, Jolypha and Princess Rooney. His female family features more than 15 stakes horses under his first three dams, including 2007 Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) winner and Churchill Downs six-furlong track record-setter Kelly's Landing ($1,853,831).
MAKALEHA represents good value for breeders who are looking to get runners. In addition to being one of the top 10 sires of 2009 in his new state, Oregon, he offers solid overall progeny statistics. Approximately four out of every five of his foals (77%) have reached the racetrack, and nearly three out of every four of those starters (70%) have reached the winner’s circle. He is represented by lifetime progeny earnings of more than $2.1 million, and average earnings per starter of more than $22,000 — a figure which is one of the highest in the state in this category.
MAKALEHA has relocated to stand at Calpalm Thoroughbreds in Grants Pass, Oregon after standing in California for a $2,000 fee in 2009. In recognition of the current economy, his 2010 fee is free to approved mares; only a $150 booking fee and any mare care expenses will be required as payment. Costs for mare care are $10 per day/dry and $12 per day/wet.
