Ellis Park stakes yields runner-up finish for Matty G gelding
The $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Memorial Handicap, conducted at Ellis Park on September 7, provided a rare sight for racegoers: each of the contenders maintained the same running position at every call of the one-mile contest, including runner-up Matty's Trail, a 4-year-old son of Matty G who raced in second throughout. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]
Saddled by trainer Ronald Pellegrini, Matty's Trail was installed as the 5-2 second wagering choice following the scratch of six competitors, which left an abbreviated four-horse field. The Kentucky-bred gelding was kept in close proximity by jockey Frederic Lenclud as the 6-5 favorite, Godolphin Gray, set fractions of :24.55, :47.91, 1:11.72 and 1:23.76 for the initial seven furlongs and completed the distance in 1:36.31. Matty's Trail reached the wire a length behind the front-running winner, but successfully held off the third-place finisher by another 2 3/4 lengths.
For the effort, Matty's Trail collected $10,000 for owner Herman Van Den Broeck, pushing his 17-race bankroll to $137,652. He has three wins and eight placings overall, including a third in the $50,000 Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Park earlier this year.
Matty's Trail was bred by Mrs. Orme Wilson Jr., and produced by the Allen's Prospect mare Ritchie Trail, a $433,215-earner who won three stakes races and placed in 10 others, including a pair of graded events.
Grade 1 winner Matty G has ranked as the top stallion in Washington since 2006, and boasts total progeny earnings of more than $10.8 million. The 16-year-old Capote sire, who stands at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, is represented by 24 stakes horses. - September 7, 2009
Matty G surpasses $10 million in lifetime progeny earnings
Matty G, the leading Thoroughbred sire in Washington for the last three years, passed a personal milestone at the conclusion of North American racing on March 8: $10 million in lifetime progeny earnings.
The 16-year-old Capote stallion, who stands at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, entered the week of March 2 with career progeny earnings of $9,950,005, and exited the week with a new, eight-figure earnings total: $10,005,359. Highlighting the history-making week for their sire were two maiden winners on the East Coast.
Kentucky-bred Matty Mae, a 3-year-old filly out of the unraced Blare of Trumpets mare Ecstasy Lady, led from gate to wire when she defeated nine older fillies and mares in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort on March 6. The dominant, 6 1/4-length winner added $12,644 to Matty G's coffers with her first career victory, which she accomplished in 1:09.33.
That same day, another member of Matty G's 2006 foal crop, the Pennsylvania-bred colt Tecate, got up for a two-length win in a $5,000 maiden claiming event at Penn National. Produced by Megan's Navy, by Polish Navy, Tecate traveled the six-furlong distance in 1:13.32 and padded his sire's lifetime record by another $5,700.
Matty G was Washington's leading sire by annual progeny earnings in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and currently leads all Evergreen State sires by money earned in 2009. The El Dorado Farms resident won the 1995 Hollywood Futurity (G1), and has achieved 23 stakes horses of his own as a stallion, including the Grade 2-winning millionaire My Cousin Matt. - March 9, 2009
Matty G represented by two stakes horses on same day
A pair of Matty G geldings - each representing an opposite side of the racing spectrum - mutually flattered their sire with their first stakes achievements on February 14. Surprisingly, however, it was the claiming veteran who came out on top.
Lightly raced Matty's Trail, a 4-year-old who competes on the Kentucky circuit year-round, stepped up to stakes company for the second time at Turfway Park and snared a third-place finish in the track's $50,000 Dust Commander Stakes, outperforming his 40-1 odds and bettering his 10th-place effort in another local stakes event from two months earlier. Bred in Kentucky by Mrs. Orme Wilson Jr. and owned by Herman Van Den Broeck, he outran seven of his nine rivals, including the Grade 1-winning millionaire Brass Hat, and missed victory in the one-mile Polytrack race by three lengths.
Trained by Ronald Pellegrini and ridden by Otto Thorwarth, Matty's Trail is a $126,152-earner out of the Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner Ritchie Trail, by Allen's Prospect. He has won three of 14 starts, and placed seven times, in allowance and maiden special weight company.
That same day, the veteran Oligarca, an 8-year-old gelding whose regular schedule revolves around four-figure claiming sprints on the Southwest fair circuit, made his 72nd career start a memorable one when he captured the 6 1/2-furlong Mike Kelly Memorial Stakes at Rillito Park in Arizona. His 1 1/4-length victory under Daniel Aguilar marked his first successful foray into stakes company in a modest race which was uniquely carded for Thoroughbreds aged 8 and up.
Produced by the winning Northern Score mare Glorious Peach and bred in Florida by Seven Wishes Legal Consultant, Oligarca is owned and trained by Ronald Magrady. He has won 11 races, with 18 placings, and banked $42,598 while competing since the age of 2.
Grade 1 winner Matty G stands in Washington, where he has dominated the state's leading sire list for the past three years. The 16-year-old Capote stallion resides at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, and is closing in on the $10-million mark in lifetime progeny earnings. - February 14, 2009

Claiming filly steps up to stakes placing for sire Matty G
On December 28, claiming veteran Special G became the 21st stakes horse for her sire, Matty G, when she stepped up to stakes company at Portland Meadows and proved she belonged with a well-earned placing.
The 3-year-old filly, who has made all 16 of her career starts during 2008 - mostly in lower-level claiming races, entered the $19,450 City of Roses Handicap on the heels of two straight victories at the Oregon oval, both at one mile in $5,000 claiming company. Contested at one mile and 70 yards in sloppy going, the stakes race attracted seven distaffers aged 3 and up, with favoritism going to the multiple stakes winner Jimbos Fire Ant.
Undaunted by their 25-1 odds, Special G and jockey J. Luis Torres moved from last at the half-mile mark to third at the wire, 6 1/4 lengths behind the winner and 3 1/2 lengths behind runner-up Jimbos Fire Ant, but a clear 9 1/2 lengths ahead of the rest of the field.
Bred in Kentucky by Phillips Racing Partnership, Special G has earned $17,019, with three wins and seven placings to date. She is out of the winner Darby Lass, by Robin des Pins, and currently races for owners Allen Floyd and Jonathan Nance, the latter of whom also serves as her trainer.
Matty G, a Grade 1 winner as a juvenile, has sired the collective earners of more than $9.6 million from eight crops to race. The 15-year-old Capote stallion stands at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, Washington, and has held the state's leading sire title for three consecutive years. - December 28, 2008
