Mixed Pleasure ancestor Seabiscuit honored in postage art
On May 11, the legendary Thoroughbred Seabiscuit was honored at his final home and resting place, Ridgewood Ranch in Willits, California, when local Postmaster Dale Briggs affixed a special 1st Day of Sale pictorial postmark on the new Seabiscuit stamped envelope and officially released it for purchase nationwide.
Designed by John Mattos, the 44-cent stamped envelope commemorates Seabiscuit's victory over Triple Crown winner War Admiral in the duo's famous match race at Maryland's Pimlico Race Course in 1938.
Among the guests who gathered for the invitation-only ceremony in front of the historic ranch house of Seabiscuit's owner, the late Charles Howard, were the 42nd Vice President of the United States (1977-1981) and U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1993-1996), Walter Mondale, and his wife, Joan, a member of the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee. To mark the occasion, the Mondales mailed congratulatory notes in the Seabiscuit stamped envelopes to the manager of the Pimlico postal substation and to Baltimore resident Howard "Gelo" Hall, who witnessed the match race as a 10-year-old.
In addition to his introduction as a U.S. Postal Service collectible, Seabiscuit has secured his legacy through the bloodlines of the 24-year-old stallion Mixed Pleasure, whose dam, Sea I'm Lucky, is a daughter of the stakes-winning sire Windy Sea. Windy Sea was produced by the 1941 Seabiscuit mare Sea Anemone.
Mixed Pleasure stands at Grand Trine Farm in Molalla, Oregon. The Sucha Pleasure sire was a Grade 2-placed dual stakes winner as a 2-year-old, and is represented by two winners from two starters. - May 11, 2009
