Stakes placing enhances Perfect Mandate colt's portfolio

Run Brother Ron, a dual stakes-winning son of the California stallion Perfect Mandate, scored his first black-type placing in nearly two years when he ran third in the $75,000 Dale Baird Memorial Stakes at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort on July 4.

The precocious winner of his home state's Beau Brummel Stakes and Everett Nevin Alameda County Futurity as a 2-year-old in 2007, the California-bred sprinter was shifted to East Coast competition in early 2009. He followed a pair of placings at Oaklawn Park at the onset of his 4-year-old campaign with three subsequent starts at Mountaineer; the latter track served as the site of two blowout allowance victories at a combined margin of more than 26 lengths. Those front-running efforts in May and June set the colt up for a tilt at the West Virginia facility's 5 1/2-furlong Baird Memorial.

Saddled by trainer Wayne McDonnell and sent postward as the 6-1 fifth wagering choice in the six-horse field, Run Brother Ron again took the lead under jockey Dana Whitney, posting fractions of :21.88 and :45.74 before ultimately fading to third, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner. He received $7,500 to push his career earnings to $166,336 for owners Philip Lebherz and George Schmitt.

A 15-time starter who has compiled five wins and four placings to date, Run Brother Ron was bred by SLU Inc. and produced by the multiple stakes-placed winner Aloha Mangos, by Bold Badgett.

Perfect Mandate veteran runs third in Sensational Star Handicap

Taking on a field of his fellow California-breds at odds of 10-1, the Perfect Mandate gelding My City by the Bay earned the second stakes placing of his career on March 29, when he held on for third after setting the pace in Santa Anita Park's $125,000 Sensational Star Handicap.

The 6-year-old veteran, who ran second last September in the 6 1/2-furlong Governor's Cup Handicap on the dirt at Fairplex Park, tackled the same distance, albeit on a different surface, in his most recent stakes attempt. The 12th running of the restricted Sensational Star was conducted on Santa Anita's unique downhill turf course, upon which My City by the Bay had turned in a hard-luck second in a $40,000 claiming race as his stakes prep on February 25.

Saddled by Jack Carava for La Canada Stables LLC, the chestnut gelding took an early lead under jockey Joe Talamo, carving out fractions of :22.97 and :45.70 through the first half-mile. When tested by his surging rivals in the stretch, My City by the Bay tenaciously held on to finish 2 1/2 lengths behind the winning favorite, Liberian Freighter.

From 17 starts to date, the consistent My City by the Bay has won three races and placed in 10 others. The $186,384-earner was produced by the winning Publicity mare Shes Enchantingtoo, and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. John J. Cayer in partnership with Old English Rancho.
