Polish Miner colt steps up in class, acquires stakes placing

Homecroft, a Delaware-bred son of leading Oregon stallion Polish Miner, became his sire's fifth stakes-caliber runner on August 22, when he overcame the sloppy conditions of Delaware Park's $75,700 New Castle Stakes to achieve his initial black-type placing. [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

The 3-year-old colt, who has made eight of his 10 lifetime starts at the host track, took advantage of his familiarity with the surroundings, and of his pairing with the meet's leading jockey, David Cohen. The rider had been aboard Homecroft for both of the colt's career victories, which occurred locally: a six-furlong win against maidens on June 16 and a five-furlong score in allowance optional claiming company on August 10, which served as his prep for the New Castle.

Facing a half-dozen starters in the six-furlong race for runners aged 3 and up, Homecroft pressed the pacesetter from the starting gate to the final furlong, running a close second until he was passed in the waning yards by the surging Wawaset Park, who got up for the place a half-length behind the front-running winner, Secretintelligence. Homecroft held on for the show, another 1 1/2 lengths back.

Homecroft has earned $92,400, with two wins and four placings to his credit. He was produced by Strike Gold's winning daughter Sent Certified, and bred by Sooner Hope Farm. Now owned by Christ Is King Stable, he hails from the barn of trainer Mark Shuman.

Polish Miner leads all Oregon stallions by winners and progeny earnings in 2009. The 12-year-old Danzig sire, who holds court at Bar C Racing Stables in Hermiston, is represented by total progeny earnings of more than $2.2 million to date. - August 22, 2009

Maryland runner is fourth stakes horse for Polish Miner

On August 1, the East Coast-based runner Ham and Ernie distinguished himself as the fourth stakes-caliber horse for Oregon's leading sire, Polish Miner, when he stepped up to black-type company in the pouring rain and came away with an honest third-place effort over a turf course downgraded to 'good.' [WATCH RACE VIDEO]

Sent postward at odds of 6-1 as one of only five contenders in Laurel Park's $50,000 Humphrey S. Finney Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile grass affair for 3-year-olds who were bred in Maryland, Ham and Ernie never appeared rushed under the direction of jockey Rosemary Homeister, the leading rider of the two-week-old meet. After breaking last from the gate, Homeister was content to keep her mount in the rear of the field, where she was able to position him alongside the rail for a ground-saving trip, less than five lengths behind the leader.

After racing in fifth, Ham and Ernie was sent widest of all as he entered the stretch. Although he was no match for the top two finishers, who reached the wire in near-unison less than three lengths in front of him, he was clearly best of the rest, as indicated by the 4 1/2-length gap behind him. The Hamilton Smith trainee earned $5,500 for his initial stakes experience, bringing his lifetime bankroll to $49,320.

Ham and Ernie is the third foal out of the winning Kyle's Our Man mare Two From the Blues, and has won three of 15 starts, with seven placings. The gelding was bred by the Fred A. Greene Jr. Rev. Trust, and is campaigned by Charles B. Johnston et al.

Polish Miner, 12, recently concluded his first breeding season at Bar C Racing Stables in Hermiston, Oregon. The multiple graded stakes-placed winner by Danzig has progeny earnings in excess of $2.2 million from four crops of racing age. - August 1, 2009

Oregon leader Polish Miner credited with another stakes horse

Polish Miner, a multiple graded stakes-placed winner who entered the Oregon stallion ranks last year as the state's leading sire by progeny earnings, was credited with his third stakes horse when his daughter Ms Mia collected the first black type of her career in the $75,000 Caught In The Rain Stakes at Philadelphia Park on July 18.

Conducted at seven furlongs for 3-year-old Pennsylvania-bred fillies, the race dwindled down to five starters when six other entrants were scratched prior to post time. With jockey David Cora in the irons, Ms Mia got off to a slow start after she bobbled out of the gate, but the duo eventually managed to save ground while running just off the pace. Although she tired late, the 5-1 third wagering choice was able to hold on for third behind the winning, even-money favorite and the 6-5 runner-up; she reached the wire nearly 14 lengths behind the winner, but she put 6 3/4 lengths between herself and the fourth-place finisher.

For her effort, Ms Mia pocketed $8,250 to push her total bankroll to $59,544. The Sylmar Farm colorbearer has made all six of her starts in her home state: four races at Penn National - where she has achieved two wins and two seconds, and one at Presque Isle Downs, where she ran fourth in her prep for Philly Park's Caught In The Rain.

Ms Mia is the second stakes horse out of the winning Polish Numbers mare The Last Deanie. She was bred by Melody Manning Diaz, and is currently trained by T. Bernard Houghton.

From his first four crops of racing age, Polish Miner has sired the collective earners of more than $2.1 million. The 12-year-old Danzig stallion stood his first season in Oregon this year at Bar C Racing Stables in Hermiston. - July 18, 2009

Welcome to our newest Showcase stallion: Polish Miner!

Thank you to Bar C Racing Stables of Hermiston, Oregon, for adding their stallion, Polish Miner, to our Showcase!

A multiple graded stakes-placed performer, Polish Miner earned $344,646 while competing from the ages of 2 to 5. After breaking his maiden at Belmont Park by nearly 10 lengths, he went on to compile an impressive record of 17 wins and placings from 30 starts. Among the races he placed in were four elite events on the dirt and turf in New York: the Remsen Stakes (G2), National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Handicap (G2), Knickerbocker Handicap (G2) and Nashua Stakes (G3) - all conducted at distances of a mile or longer.

The 12-year-old Danzig stallion offers breeders a genetic goldmine. He is out of the winning Mr. Prospector mare Miner's Game, a full sister to the leading sire Seeking the Gold. Among his eight winning siblings are the Grade 3 winner Survivalist and the deceased stallion Polish Gift, sire of the dual Washington champion Margo's Gift.

From his first three crops to race, Polish Miner has already sired the collective earners of more than $1.7 million, including two stakes horses. He was Maryland's leading first-crop sire of 2006, Washington's leading second-crop sire of 2007 and Oregon's leading third-crop sire of 2008 upon his arrival in the state last fall. In 2009, he is standing his first breeding season in Oregon for a $1,500 fee, live foal guarantee.
