Poteen runner bests state-breds in Hollywood stakes debut

Star Nicholas, a first-crop son of the California-based stallion Poteen, earned his inaugural stakes title on December 14, when he outran four rivals in Hollywood Park's restricted, $77,275 On Trust Handicap.

With Michael Baze in the irons, the 5-year-old gelding employed a fourth-place stalking position in the early going of the 7 1/2-furlong race on CushionTrack, moved four-wide into the stretch and ultimately survived a stewards' inquiry after he drifted in nearing the wire, which he reached a half-length in front in a brisk final time of 1:27.46. Saddled by Peter Eurton, the California-bred runner collected a $47,275 check, boosting his overall bankroll to $173,251.

Bred by Pete Cristofi and Bob Nugent and campaigned by King Max Farms, Ron Mostero, Bob Nugent et al, Star Nicholas was produced by the Royal Roberto winner Viznaga. He has won four of 13 starts to date, with each winning effort achieved in 2008. The On Trust signaled his debut in stakes company.

Star Nicholas is the chief earner for his sire, Poteen, a multiple Group 1-placed stakes winner who resides at Old English Rancho in Sanger, California. Now 14, the Irish River (Fr) sire is represented by total progeny earnings of more than $740,000, from four crops to race. - December 14, 2008
