Unusual Heat entered stud in 1998.

 

From 10 crops of racing age, he has sired more than 220 winners and the cumulative earners of more than $26,200,000, including 76 earners of more than $100,000 each — 13 of them over $200,000, 11 over $300,000, four over $400,000, four over $500,000, one over $600,000, one over $800,000 and one over $1,000,000.

 

He is represented by lifetime average earnings per starter of more than $81,000, which is the highest such figure among all active California stallions. He is the sire of 51 stakes horses (38 black-type), including eight graded stakes winners and eight graded stakes-placed winners in the United States.

 

In 2008, Unusual Heat reigned supreme as California’s leading sire by progeny earnings ($5,827,513) and North America’s leading active turf sire ($2,893,629). During that year, his 140 runners won 138 races and earned $5,827,513 — a single-season record for a California-based stallion.

 

In 2009, he again led all California sires, with year-end progeny earnings of $5,184,194 and a tally of 145 races won by his 141 runners. His leading earner for the year was Hollywood Derby (G1) winner and California champion The Usual Q. T. ($1,013,320).

 

In 2010, he is already represented by the Grade 1 winners Acclamation ($502,048) and The Usual Q. T. and the Grade 2 winner Pretty Unusual ($304,152).

 

His sons and daughters have earned more than $1,000,000 for eight consecutive years, from 2003 through 2010.

 

Two of his California-bred fillies have been honored with the prestigious Valkyr Trophy for their racing achievements. Grade 1 winner Golden Doc A ($580,126) won for the 2007/2008 period, and the Grade 2-winning dual California champion Lethal Heat ($655,988) received the award for 2008/2009.

 

Unusual Heat’s Average Earnings Index is the highest among all California sires: 2.16, far better than his Comparable Index of 1.09, indicating that he moves his mares far up in class. His Sire Production Index is a lofty 1.88.
