SOUL OF THE MATTER was a racehorse of extreme class, winning at distances from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles on fast, sloppy and muddy tracks. He won or placed in graded stakes races at six different tracks in three states and on two continents.
SOUL OF THE MATTER won the Grade 1 Super Derby and three Grade 2 races: the San Felipe Stakes and Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita Park and the Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood Park. He also placed in five graded/group stakes, including the $4 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1), in which he lost a stirring half-length decision to Horse of the Year Cigar.
SOUL OF THE MATTER raced with the best and was as good as the best. Overall, he started 16 times and won or placed in 13 of those races. In the other three races, he ran fourth twice in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
SOUL OF THE MATTER was retired in the spring of his 5-year-old season after suffering a fracture of his right front pastern while in training. The injury, not due to faulty conformation, does not prevent him from running freely in his paddock at E.A. Ranches.
SOUL OF THE MATTER is a son of the $1,243,947-earner Private Terms out of a half-sister to Eclipse Champion filly Heartlight No. One. His pedigree provides a rare outcross to many California mares; it is completely free of both Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer and their sons and daughters.
SOUL OF THE MATTER entered stud in Japan upon retiring from the track, and returned to California to stand in the United States for the first time in 2004. Overall, he is represented by international progeny earnings of more than $8.2 million to date, with average earnings per starter of more than $51,000. Among his most notable runners are the group-placed winner Soulful City (Jpn) and the stakes-placed winner Mobilized ($136,958), the latter of whom hails from his second California-conceived crop.
SOUL OF THE MATTER stands at E.A. Ranches in Santa Ysabel, California. His 2010 fee is $1,500, live foal guarantee.

| "Soul of the
Matter was one of my all-time favorites. He is surely better suited to
an American racing program. He had the great combination of enough speed
with an extreme amount of class to carry that as far as horses can run.
He was also very sound other than a nagging quarter-crack. Give him a good
chance!"--Richard Mandella, trainer of Soul of the Matter. |
