SPENSIVE was a racehorse! As a 2-year-old, he opened his racing career with a two-length win in a six-furlong maiden special weight race at historic Del Mar. He followed that up with a win in the one-mile Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, defeating eventual Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Buddy Gil. Later, he would add to his stakes credentials by finishing third in the Beau Brummel Stakes at Fairplex Park, in which both the winner and second-place finisher would go on to become graded stakes-placed performers. At the conclusion of his 2-year-old season, Spensive was a winner of nearly $100,000 from a line of 5-2-1-1, with his only off-the-board finish being a fourth in the Grade 3 Golden Gate Derby, where he was only two lengths behind the winner.
SPENSIVE continued to impress as a 3-year-old. Among his six trips postward, he earned three more stakes placings, including a second-place finish to Grade 1 performer Rojo Toro in the one-mile San Rafael Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, where he defeated Crowned Dancer, the previous season's Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3) winner. Spensive also finished second that season when stretching out to 1 1/16 miles in the $500,000 WinStar Derby at Sunland Park, where he was beaten only a neck by the Grade 3-winning millionaire Excessivepleasure. He would go on to claim another stakes placing with a third-place finish in the 1 1/8-mile Sham Stakes, defeating Travers Stakes (G1) winner Ten Most Wanted in a race that was won by Belmont Stakes (G1), Wood Memorial (G1) and Florida Derby (G1) winner Empire Maker. After two years of racing and 11 starts, Spensive's earnings exceeded a quarter of a million dollars.
SPENSIVE went on to make nine more starts over the next three seasons at ages 4, 5 and 6, and defeated several other stakes performers in an allowance race at Hollywood Park. However, minor injuries kept him from regaining his past form, so he was retired to the breeding shed in 2007 with lifetime earnings of $313,557.
SPENSIVE's success on the racetrack is not surprising, given that he is by Ponche, who amassed earnings of $437,086 from a 47-race career in which he won or placed in 12 stakes races. Ponche is a Calder track record-setter who won the Emerald Dunes, Glitterman and Plantation Handicaps, and who has gained recent recognition as the broodmare sire of multiple Grade 2 winner Mucho Macho Man, the third-place finisher in the 2011 Kentucky Derby (G1) and the runner-up in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Ponche is a son of the outstanding Mr. Prospector stallion Two Punch, who sired more than 50 stakes winners and the collective earners of more than $49 million prior to his death in 2011. Among Two Punch’s successful offspring are the Grade 1-winning Eclipse Champion Sprinter and prominent Kentucky sire Smoke Glacken and the Grade 3 stakes winner and regional sire Fistfite. These strong roots not only position Spensive to be an outstanding sire, but also an excellent future broodmare sire.
SPENSIVE's dam, Operate Quick, was a 2-year-old winner who has gone on to become a prolific broodmare, with 19 live foals produced from 1992 through 2010. She is by Dr. Schwartzman, a multiple graded stakes winner of more than $380,000 from 29 starts, including 14 stakes performances from the ages of 2 through 5.
SPENSIVE had all the qualities of a good racehorse: precocity, consistency and durability. He, as well as his sire, dam and dam sire, were all winners as 2-year-olds. He, his sire and dam sire were all winners from the ages of 2 through 4. He, his sire and dam sire were all durable performers, all making in excess of 20 or more lifetime starts.
SPENSIVE puts plenty of bone into his foals, giving them durability and soundness plus talent. From three crops of racing age, he is the sire of 50% winners from starters, a group which includes the multiple winners Spensive’s Image and Rico Espada and the 2012 juvenile winner Phar too Quick.
SPENSIVE stands at E.A. Ranches in Ramona, California as the property of Y-Lo Racing Stables LLC. His 2013 fee is $2,500, live foal guarantee.
There is an axiom that says the best predictor of a sire's success at stud is his success on the racetrack. Given Spensive's racing record and pedigree, how could he NOT be a smashing success in the breeding shed?
