Spensive was second in the Beau Brummel Stakes at Fairplex Park in his second career start and won the $80,000 Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields to conclude his 2-year-old season.

Spensive followed at 3 with a fourth in the Grade 3 Golden Gate Derby at Golden Gate Fields (only two lengths behind the winner), a third in the $80,000 non-blacktype Sham Stakes and a second in the Grade 2 San Rafael Stakes (only one length back) at Santa Anita, and a second in the $500,000 WinStar Derby (beaten by a neck) at Sunland Park.

Spensive's sire, Ponche, a son of Two Punch, won or placed in 12 stakes races, earning $427,086. He set a new track record for seven furlongs in winning the Emerald Dunes Handicap at Calder Race Course.

Spensive's pedigree boasts the merging of the dominant Raise a Native/Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer/Nijinsky 2nd lines on his sire's side coupled with a female line providing the European influence of *Herbager, *Ribot, *Tudor Minstrel, and *Court Martial.
