SUANCES (GB) was a high-weighted 3-year-old in France at seven to 9 1/2 furlongs, a distance highly predictive of sire success. He scored a six-length victory in the prestigious Emirates Airline Prix Jean Prat (G1), one of France's most important races for 3-year-olds, and also won the Prix de Guiche (G3), both at about 1 1/8 miles. He was undefeated in four starts at 3 in France and Spain.
SUANCES moved to the United States to race at 5. Although he was unplaced in his first start in new surroundings, in the Grade 2 Explosive Bid Breeders' Cup Handicap at Fair Grounds, he never again finished off the board, earning nearly $300,000 in the four races that followed.
SUANCES captured the Grade 2 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile Handicap at Bay Meadows and the $250,000 Dallas Turf Cup Handicap at Lone Star Park, placed third in the Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar and ran fourth in the Grade 1 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park while posting a 103 Beyer Speed Figure. (For a turf writer's comments about his U.S. campaign, click here.)
SUANCES was a model of consistency. He retired with eight wins and two placings from 12 starts in Spain, France and the U.S., total earnings of $402,559 and championship laurels in France. In his Bay Meadows victory, he posted a 105 Beyer while beating the Grade 1-winning millionaires Sarafan and The Tin Man and the Grade 2 winner Decarchy.
SUANCES is a son of the champion racehorse Most Welcome (GB), a recently deceased grandson of Northern Dancer who is little known in this country but who is regarded as a major sire in Europe, where his offspring include champions in eight different countries. In North America, his runners include the graded stakes winners Eccentric (GB), Prize Giving (GB) and Call Me (GB).
SUANCES was represented by his first crop of runners in 2008, a group that includes the stand-out colt Feisty Suances ($207,628). At 2, Feisty Suances was the gate-to-wire winner of his first three career starts in Southern California, and he concluded his first season of racing with a second-place finish in Santa Anita Park's $125,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes. In 2009, Feisty Suances ran second to multiple Grade 1 winner and subsequent Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Pioneerof the Nile in Santa Anita's $200,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2), then scored his own four-length victory in the $75,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.
SUANCES is represented by overall progeny earnings of more than $360,000 and average earnings per starter of more than $36,000 from three crops of racing age.
