Swiss Yodeler seeks repeat title as California's top 2YO sire
California mainstay Swiss Yodeler, a 15-year-old stallion who has been a perennial force among the state's sires since his first year of eligibility in 2002, has already sent out four juvenile winners of 2009 in his repeat attempt to carry the crown as California's top sire of 2-year-olds again this year.
Winner of the revered Hollywood Futurity (G1) and four additional stakes races at 2 and an eventual earner of more than $760,000 during his own four-year athletic career, Swiss Yodeler entered stud in California in 1999 and quickly made a name for himself when his first foals reached the racetrack three years later. From 2002 through 2008, the Eastern Echo stallion remained among the state's leading sires of 2-year-olds by annual progeny earnings and number of winners in this category.
He reached the pinnacle as California's top-ranked juvenile sire in 2006, when he was represented at year's end by 24 winners from 61 starters and earnings of $1,072,052 from this age group. That same year, he reigned as the Golden State's leading overall sire, with $4,880,827 in total progeny earnings and the Eclipse Champion Sprinter, Thor's Echo, to his credit.
Swiss Yodeler again ended the year atop the state's juvenile sire list in 2008, when he achieved 15 winners from 28 starters and total 2-year-old progeny earnings of $486,379. He appears poised to top this statistical category again this year, having already sent out four winners from 15 starters among his 67 reported 2-year-olds of 2009.
His four juvenile winners - three colts and one filly - were each bred in California and achieved their initial victories during the current Hollywood Park meet. Ritzville was the first to reach the winner's circle, following a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight test on April 29. Next was Swiss Exploit, winner of a $40,000 maiden claiming race at the same distance on May 6, followed by the five-furlong winner Really Uptown, who accomplished the feat on May 30. The most recent of his 2-year-old winners is the filly Sam's Special, gate-to-wire winner of a $40,000 maiden claiming event conducted at 5 1/2 furlongs on June 11.
As a group, Swiss Yodeler's early 2-year-old runners have banked a state-best $143,234 through June 15, enough to rank their sire third among all North American stallions by 2009 juvenile earnings.
Swiss Yodeler stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California, and is represented by lifetime progeny earnings of nearly $18.2 million; approximately $4.6 million (25%) of that amount has been earned by his 2-year-olds. - June 15, 2009
Sophomore Swiss Yodeler filly wires New Mexico stakes race
Facing a field of five rival 3-year-old fillies on May 30, the Swiss Yodeler-sired Canyon Yodeler led every step of the way and ultimately captured her first stakes title in the $50,000 Aspen Cup Handicap at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
Carded at six furlongs, the Aspen Cup marked the black-type debut of the California-bred filly, who was produced by the winning For Really mare Really a Lady and sold for $15,000 as a yearling in Arizona. She was bred by Billingsley Creek Ranch and races for owner Desert Sun Stables and trainer David Wolochuk.
Canyon Yodeler was partnered with jockey Joe Martinez and sent postward at odds of 7-1 as the longest shot in the race. The duo grabbed the lead immediately after the break, set fractions of :22.00, :44.80 and :57.80 and successfully held off two fast-closing rivals in the stretch to post a three-quarter-length victory in 1:11.80. With her effort, the chestnut filly collected $30,000 to rocket her five-race earnings to $48,400.
A winner in her career debut at Turf Paradise in mid-January, Canyon Yodeler went on to capture a six-furlong claiming race at Sunland Park in early April.
Swiss Yodeler, a Grade 1 winner who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California, is represented by 20 stakes winners from eight crops to race, led by 2006 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Thor's Echo. Sons and daughters of the 15-year-old Eastern Echo stallion have earned more than $18.1 million, collectively. - May 30, 2009
Swiss Yodeler filly earns black type during Sunshine Millions
Yodelady O, a filly from the 2006 crop of prominent California stallion Swiss Yodeler, made a late run at the leaders in the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks at Santa Anita Park on January 24, and was rewarded with the first black type of her young career.
The John Sadler-trained filly, who races as a homebred for Oakcrest Stable, brought up the rear of the nine-horse field for the first half-mile of the six-furlong test, which was conducted on the Pro-Ride all-weather surface. But she responded to the urging of jockey Garrett Gomez and picked off all but two of her competitors in the final stages of the race, which was restricted to 3-year-old fillies who had been bred in either California or Florida. Installed as the seventh wagering choice at odds of 12-1, she completed her first stakes attempt two lengths shy of the winner, Beltene, and banked $30,000 for her third-place effort.
California-bred Yodelady O is the first foal out of the stakes-placed winner Madam General, by General Meeting. She has won one of five starts in Southern California, with three placings, for total earnings of $63,360.
Grade 1 winner Swiss Yodeler stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California. The 15-year-old son of Eastern Echo led all statewide sires by progeny earnings in 2006, and ended 2008 as California's leading sire of 2-year-olds by progeny earnings. - January 24, 2009
