Woodbridge News
From Sue Greene
July 27
Tannersmyman had another first-time starter
win--Shouldabeenmaizey. She was bred and is owned by Woodbridge Farm. Running
at Emerald Downs for Pete Axmaker, she won the first race on July 24, earning
$3,685.00. She broke alertly to stalk the leaders from the inside (not
outside as stated in the Form) moved up to engage Coco'srivatelable with
a furlong to run and proved best over that rival in a stiff drive. This
filly was the only filly in this 2-year-old maiden race. Four of Tannersmyman's
six winners have won at first asking. Shouldabeenmaizey picked up the win
in her debut, as did Gary John, She's A Tanner, and Devilish Denae. Both
three-time winner A Toast To Tanner ($59,165) and Grade 3-winner Autism
Awareness ($151,967) took several starts to win, but they did.
March 10
Woodbridge Farm is very proud of Tannersmyman's first G3 winning son
Autism Awareness. This colt is the second foal out of the Sharp Victor
mare Lady Essex and he is a graduate of the CTBA Pleasanton yearling sale
for the very reasonable price of only $1,000.00. Tannersmyman also won
at this distance along with sprinting so getting the distance was never
a question to us.
This stallion is such a dream to be around and every single one of his
foals is smart, classy and just great to handle. I have always had faith
in "Tanner" as a sire and now maybe he will get some respect from the race
world. We sold Lady Essex at the Barretts January sale, again for a nominal
price of only $3,200.00 in foal with a full sibling. We currently have
the yearling full brother here at the farm and look forward to watching
him move forward in his pursuit of maybe another graded stakes win.
We are all smiles here at Woodbridge Farm. Thank you, Mr. Johnny Taboada
(his owner), and all the connections to Autism Awareness. For anyone who
is unfamiliar with this disease, April is Autism Awareness month and we
are currently involved with the first annual Autism Awareness walk for
the cure in Stanislaus County, so contact the farm for info or ways you
can help and get involved. Congratulations again to all involved, way to
go, Tanner!
February 18
I am sort of behind in updates from Woodbridge Farm, but we are very
very proud of Tannersmyman's lastest first-time starter, Devilish Denae.
She is the second foal and first to start from Devilish Quest and a Pleasanton
CTBA yearling sale grad. Devilish Denae demonstrated Tannersman's foals'
great mentality and composure in the paddock and post parade and had to
overcome a stumbling rival out of the gate to be shuffled back at the start,
then weaved her way through traffic and came on the rail to win going away.
She paid a big price of $44.00 to win, not that we had any on that but
just a nice note to a happy story. Tannersmyman has now had eight starters
and six winners. Three of those won at first asking. Impressive statistics
for a young sire!
We are also proud of our favorite Woodbridge "daughter" in Somethinaboutlaura
who ran her race once again and finished a very nice third in the G1 Santa
Maria Handicap. She is quite the "Iron Lady" and we hope she continues
her running through the 08 season.
January 6
Tannersmyman's son Autism Awareness, a 3-year-old, ran a huge second
Friday at Golden Gate Fields in his first attempt going a route of ground.
He set the early fractions and held on gamely to secure his second-place
finish and add $7,800 to his climbing bankroll.
His full sister looks to now be a real steal from the last CTBA yearling
sale held at Pleasanton this past September. His mother, Lady Essex, in
foal with a full sibling, will sell this month at Barretts January mixed
sale as Hip
Number 339. She just might be a great buy considering the way her son
is running!
December 5
Great news again about Somethinaboutlaura! She is now among an elite
group of Cal-bred horses who are millionaires. Her earnings now total $1,008,865!
She was foaled and raised at Woodbridge Farm--a wonderful race mare who
the Pacific Heights Stakes Saturday at Golden Gate Fields to make her a
millionaire.
She was bred by Al and Toni Lilley, who live in Tracy and kept her dam
with us during the time Laura was being raised. She was purchased as a
weanling by Phil Rowe, as a client of Woodbridge Farm, who sold her shortly
after her maiden win. She's owned now by Jerry Hollendorfer, Charles
D. Miller, John G. Sikura and George Todaro.
We are very proud of this great race mare and look forward to
watching her continue to run before retiring to the breeding shed.
July 14
It looks like all you have to do is lead Gary John over to the paddock
and go collect your check! This durable 3-year-old gelding did his job
again and won very impressively at Hollywood Park Thursday. He's Tannersmyman's
first starter and winner as a 2-year-old and he hasn't missed a check yet.
He is rapidly approaching the 100K mark and is one of three 3-year-olds
currently running and winning for Tannersmyman.
July 8
We are once again so proud of our homebred SomethinaboutLaura, who ran
a huge race Friday night at Hollywood to win the A Gleam G2 at 7 furlongs.
"Laura" had the outside post of 10 and let her field of competitors break
while she held dead aim on them from the outside. She rallied around the
turn to take command and win drawing away. This is her second win in the
G2 A Gleam Handicap.
"Laura's" earnings are now nearing the millionaire mark, needing only
another 100K to reach that goal. Congratulations to Lilley Ranch, who bred
this nice filly, and to Jerry Hollendorfer and her latest owners on this
nice win by a filly that was foaled and raised here at Woodbridge.
June 30
We get to brag once again! Our homebred 3-year-old gelding Gary John
added to his bankroll Thursday with a nice win in the second race at Hollywood
Park. He added $13,800 to his already large bankroll and for his new trainer,
Ted West.
June 11
Okay, so maybe everyone will feel like we are just repeating ourselves,
but our gal SomethinaboutLaura has done it again. She ran yesterday at
Hollywood Park in the second running of the Redondo Beach Stakes on the
turf and set all the fractions, digging in gamely down the lane to win
by a head over Dancing Edie. As always, we are proud to have bred, foaled
and raised this outstanding Cal-bred filly, who just keeps adding to her
very large bankroll. Congratulations to Lilley Ranch, who owned her as
a baby and who are still actively involved in breeding here in California.
June 4
Tannersmyman had his fourth starter from his first crop, which are now
3-year-olds, a filly named She's a Tanner. Making her debut at Golden
Gate Fields in the first race Sunday in the 1-hole position, she broke
on top, gamely edged clear of the field then won a very close drive to
the finish. She set all the fractions of :22.1, :44.3, :56.4 and finished
in 1:09.4. Her winning paycheck was $9,350.
Tannersmyman had only five foals in his first crop, which includes stakes-placed
and also winner in his first start Gary John, winner A Toast to Tanner,
placed Just Shirley and now She's a Tanner.
June 2
A 2-year-old runner by Tannersmyman, Autism Awareness, just ran Thursday
(his third start) in a maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields
and once again drew the #1 post position (he has been in the one hole each
race, and what are the odds of that!) and ran a huge second to a colt that
was purchased for $40,000. Autism Awareness, born and raised right here
at Woodbridge, was 5 1/2 lengths in front of the third-place horse. He
was a Pleasanton purchase last year for his current owner for a mere $1,000.
May 19
Tannersmyman's first winner/stakes placed runner Gary John made his
debut on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park yesterday to win impressively
going 7 1/2 furlongs. A Toast To Tanner had won earlier on Cushion Track,
which tells us Tannersmyman's foals look to be able to handle the new surfaces
being put down in California.
Woodbridge Farm is happy to see Everybodycutfootlos break his maiden
at Golden Gate Fields going 5 furlongs on the turf. He is the first foal
to run out of Woodbridge's mare, Tappin Her Toes. Her second foal, a filly
by Capsized, was bought back at Barretts last October and is currently
in training and looks extremely promising. We have a 2-year-old Capsized
filly out of this mare we bought back at Barretts last October because
we really like her. She also has a Tannersmyman yearling that is stunning
and she had another Tannersmyman colt this year!
May 16
Once again we are proud of SomethinaboutLaura, who added to her bankroll
again on Sunday with another impressive win in the Work The Crowd Handicap
at Golden Gate Fields. She took command of the race from the start and
never let another interfere with her aim on the win. She has been an amazing
mare for everyone who has had the pleasure of being around her during her
career. We look forward to her next start.
May 3
We are just full of smiles here with the weekend win of SomethinaboutLaura
in the B. Thoughtful Stakes at Hollywood Park and on May 1, also at Hollywood
Park, in her debut, Red Hot Rene won her first start as the odds-on favorite.
This filly was raised here at Woodbridge Farm for her breeders, G.C. and
Mary Bewall of Diablo. We took this filly to Barretts last October and
she was purchased for $40,000 for her new connections. Congratulations
to her new owner, John M. Liviakis, and her trainer, Melody Conlon!.
May 1
Have to make sure we get to brag about SomethinaboutLaura and her very
great run and win in the B. Thoughtful Stakes Sunday at Hollywood Park
during the Gold Rush Days program. She broke alertly and ran third to the
turn where she hooked up with Getback Time, but that rival came over to
bump hard with SomethinaboutLaura and continued to lug in while leading
the way to the wire. Fortunately the stewards saw the stretch incident
and took Getback Time's number down and put SomethinaboutLaura up to win
the stake.
"Laura" was foaled and raised here at Woodbridge Farm for Lilley Ranch,
who have enjoyed watching this great mare continue to add to her bankroll
and their breeders awards. This weekend we are also watching Mistical Plan,
who is pointing toward the Kentucky Oaks on May 4 We wish her connections
and Carol Anderson, her breeder, racing luck and a win!
April 14
We really do need to brag, because Sassy Blend won the maiden special
weight race for 2-year-olds Thursday at Bay Meadows. She's a filly by Richly
Blended out of Sassy Synner that we raised for her breeders, Fernando and
Sandra Matos and Milt Douzos. She was bought back in the Barretts October
select yearling sale last October.
She's only the third foal out of that nice mare, Sassy Synner, who has
a very nice Lost Soldier colt at side this year. She's still owned by her
breeders and is trained by Gil Matos. Congratulations to all of them!
March 12
One of our favorite daughters has done it again! Mistical Plan broke
on top and went on to win impressively Saturday in the $400,000 Fair Grounds
Oaks, a Grade 2 race at the Fair Grounds. She's earned $475,765 and she's
just a 3-year-old!
We had the honor to foal and raise at Woodbridge here for breeder Carol
Anderson, who has her dam, Mistical Bel, booked back to Game Plan, Mistical
Plan's sire. Mistical Bel comes to stay with us when she is either foaling
or running under lights but goes to Carol's new place after being bred.
We also foaled and raised Mistical Bel's current 2-year-old, a filly by
Capsized, as well as her yearling colt by For Really.
We also got good news Sunday when Gary John ran big and just lost by
a nose at Bay Meadows. That increased his earnings to $47,345. He's a 3-year-old
from Tannersmyman's first crop.
January 30
We couldn't be happier about the results of
Saturday's Sunshine Millions. Mistical Plan, a filly that we raised here
at Woodbridge, won the $250,000 Oaks at Santa Anita. It was her second
stakes win and besides that she's placed in two graded stakes. She's won
three times in seven starts and has earned $235,765!
Congratulations to her breeder, Carol Anderson,
her owner, J. Paul Reddam, and her trainer, Doug O'Neill!
And more good news! Tannersmyman's 4-year-old
full sister Actslikealady ran a good third January 20 in the Grade 3 First
Lady Handicap at Gulfstream Park.
November 20
Our homebred Somethinaboutlaura destroyed her
field with an easy win on Saturday in the Autumn Leaves Handicap at Bay
Meadows. Winning time for the mile and 1/16th was a fast 1:41.90 carrying
high weight in the field of six.
Interestingly on that Saturday the Lilleys,
who are the breeders of Somethinaboutlaura, were here at Woodbridge Farm
looking at their horses and we watched the race together while searching
for stallions for their mares for the '07 breeding season.
I received an email from a gal who stated
she now owns Krismemow, Somethinaboutlaura's full sister. The woman purchased
Kris from a rescue group in California, where both Kris and her full brother
Udamanmatt where headed for
slaughter!
Krismenow is currently jumping (and not for
sale) and is the love of this woman's life, and Udamanmatt, who apparently
has bowed rather severely, is with her mother. I know that the Lilleys
are extremely grateful to both these women for giving their offspring great
homes since we were totally unaware of where either of these horses had
gone.
This of course brings up the horse slaughter
issue and while I didn't know Udamanmatt after we sold him as a weanling,
it was my understanding from the trainer of Krismenow that she had cracked
a shin and he felt she couldn't fun and was "sold" as a broodmare to an
unknown person.
Unknown to us she was apparently sold to the
party that disposes of "used" race horses to slaughter. I saddens and angers
me since I have numerous retired or "disposed-of" race horses here that
I will now take responsibility for the rest of their lives.
I guess the point I am trying to state is
as owners of these animals who give us so much without asking for anything
but to care and respect them, we owe it to them to either find them good
homes or have them retrained into a new career if possible. Enough said.
I am glad both of these horses found such wonderful people to care for
them.
Also, an update for Tannersmyman. His first
foal to run and win, Gary John, ran a huge race on November 15, getting
bumped hard at the start to eventually finish third and gaining in a fast
allowance race. His has finished out of the money only once in his career--five
starts to date.
October 30
Mistical Bell (see
below) is looking good heading into the Breeders' Cup. She won the Cover
Gal Stakes at Oak Tree on October 8 and was second Sunday in the $100,000-added
Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs, a Grade 3 race, after leading through
most of the stretch. She's earned $85,281 in just four starts.
October 29
I just have to talk about Somethinaboutlaura.
She is amazing and won the Matron at Cal Cup '06 very impressively. Congratulations
to Lilley Ranch, a long-time client of Woodbridge Farm and to all the connections
of Laura. We are proud to have foaled and raised such a wonderful race
mare.
We are also excited about another Woodbridge
Farm graduate, Mistical Plan, the very talented 2-year-old filly out of
Mistical Bel, who was raised at Woodbridge Farm and is on the entry list
for the 2-year-old filly Juvenile Race in the upcoming '06 Breeders' Cup
on November 4. We wish Carol Anderson, Gloria Buckridge and all her new
connections race luck!
August 17
Tannersmyman had a super sale at Pleasanton,
with the In Trust filly selling for $40,000, the She's A Starr colt selling
for $19,000, the Kourion filly selling for $5,000, the Devilish Quest filly
selling for $3,700, the She's Right filly selling for $3,200, and the Lady
Essex filly selling for $1,000. That's an average of $11,983, That almost
12 times his stud fee! The public only has one more opportunity to purchase
a Tannersmyman yearling--at Barretts Select Sale October 3, then they will
just have to wait till next year!
February 22
We are busy here at Woodbridge having foals and breeding the open or
early foaling mares. We have had a beautiful Benchmark filly out of G2
winning grand daughter of Mr. Prospector, a Capsized colt out of Blazing
Deputy, and cute Decarchy colt out of first time Gentleman mare, Gentleman's
Girl and our first was a filly by Capsized out of another first time foaling
Septieme Ciel mare, we are also very excited about the Beau Genius colt,
who is a full brother to the highest priced yearling filly last Barretts
October from our consignment.
We are very proud of our Dance Floor filly,
Somethinaboutlaura, who recently became graded stakes placed along with
being the sale topper at the recent Fasig-Tipton sale with a price tag
of $375,000.00! Another homebred runner who has now topped his earnings
over the $100,000.00 mark is the gelded Native Prospector Rae's Totts,
for John Clickner.
We have some very nice young allowance winners
currently running very well, the biggest earner thus far in Awesome Honor.
We are watching the Swiss Yodeler filly Bonnie Jones currently working
in Southern California. She was our second highest selling yearling last
October at Barretts for a price tag of $67,000.00. We will have a half
brother to her coming down this October.
The North end of our farm has been under construction
for the past several months, a new 18 stall barn is now up and we are now
busy with the construction of the Eurociser. Weather permitting, all construction
should be completed by April.
We are looking forward to Tannersmyman's first
crop running this year and really excited about the foals to come this
year. His best book of mares yet are currently foaling.
And on a not-so-horsey note, my daughter is
now a freshman in college, still studying Musical Theatre and still the
pride and joy of my life!
