Barretts March 2-Year-Old Sale Pinhooks, 2008

By Don Engel
Editor, The Showcase

Since its beginning in 1990, the Barretts March sale of 2-year-olds in training has depended on speculators to fill its catalog with high-quality
racing prospects.
The 2008 catalog is no exception. Of the
190 horses cataloged, no fewer than 168 will
be making their second or even third trips to a
sale ring in the March 14 auction.
Some of those are still owned by their
breeders who intended to sell them in earlier sales but didn't get prices they were willing to accept,
but the great majority were purchased by

pinhookers--the trade name for speculators who purchase at auction.
Pinhooking has become a major industry, with some practitioners highly skilled in their art. For many, it's a full-time profession, and they come back year after year, often with horses for which they've paid substantial sums of money. There's no way to know how many of the consignors listed in the catalogs are gambling with their own money, but a majority of them are probably representing investors or groups of investors.
Of course, those investors aren't really investors, as the term is generally understood. The enterprise, filled with risk, is more accurately identified as a gamble, since any investment that carries the risk of a complete loss of the money invested is difficult to classify as an investment.
Whether it's an investment or a gamble, the attraction of pinhooking is the possibility of a huge gain, risk vs. reward.
No major 2-year-old sale goes by without at least one horse selling for a breathtaking profit.
At last year's Barretts March sale, an Officer colt was the high-seller at $1,400,000, a handsome reward for the purchaser of the same horse at a yearling sale six months earlier for $190,000.
In 2006, a Distorted Humor colt bought for $125,000 as a yearling in September topped the Barretts sale at $1,500,000.
In 2005, a Songandaprayer colt was the sale's high-seller at $1,800,000. He had been purchased for $95,000 the preceding July.
Those are the payoffs that bring players to the game. Not nearly as well-publized are those that sell at a loss, not to mention those that are injured in training and will never either sell or race. A total loss.
Prices of pinhooked horses in this March's Barretts sale are listed below. These prices are published to help our readers monitor the Thoroughbred market--or just to enhance their interest as spectators--and are absolutely not intended for use in appraising horses for purchase. Many factors can change a horse's value between sales, most of all the difference in training status. Some horses show promise in presale workouts on the track; others do not, and their performances greatly influence the prices they bring, for better or for worse.
The information below came from The Blood-Horse magazine's online database of sale results, a source which we gratefully acknowledge.
Following are the horses who went through the ring in earlier sales, with Barretts March hip number, sex, sire, sale price, purchaser, and sale. An explanation of sale abbreviations follows the list of horses. All the prices shown are for yearlings except the few that were purchased as weanlings. Those prices as identified with a "w." Final bids for horses not sold are italicized. In those cases, of course, there is no buyer. Where there are two transactions, the first that occurred is listed first.
