Stallions are eligible for the 2011 Don Engel Memorial California Freshman Sire Contest if they originally entered stud in North America for the 2008 breeding season, and if they are reported as actively standing in California for the 2011 breeding season. The oldest reported foals of these stallions are 2-year-olds of 2011.
Listed below are some of the California stallions who meet this criteria, according to statistics published by The Jockey Club, California Thoroughbred Breeders Association and other sources. Contest eligibility is not restricted to these stallions, nor should this list be considered wholly accurate or complete; it is merely supplied as a guide. Contest participants are encouraged to perform their own independent research, and may wish to rank stallions on their entry form who might not be listed here, but who might otherwise be eligible.
Prizes will be awarded to the contestants who finish first through third overall, based on points allocated to the top five California-based first-crop sires by progeny earnings accrued in 2011. The year-end list published by "The Blood-Horse" in January 2012 will serve as the official statistical resource for this contest.
The information provided below for each stallion includes: Name, Year of Birth, Sire, Dam, Broodmare Sire, 2011 Location Within California, Career Race Record (starts-wins-seconds-thirds/lifetime earnings and best race performance) and Number of Live Foals of 2009/2-Year-Olds of 2011, as reported to The Jockey Club and other sources.
