The Showcase Stallion Directory provides photographs and continuously updated information on
dozens and dozens of Western stallions and includes:
A pedigree-only feature that makes it possible to leaf through the stallions' pedigrees,
one by one. Click here to begin.
For breeders seeking specific
bloodlines, a sire index shows the sires found in each Showcase
stallion's pedigree, with the generation in which they occur.
Each stallion website includes a standard four-generation pedigree, but in addition a link following
that pedigree will take you to a pedigree page that can be printed out
separately.
An important aspect of
the Showcase Stallion Directory is that all stakes information is based
on blacktype rules, requiring that any race designated as a
"stakes race" must carry a minimum purse value. Originally, that minimum
was $15,000. It has been increased through the years to $25,000 in 1990,
to $30,000 in 2002, $35,000 in 2003, $40,000 in 2004, and $45,000 in 2007
and will be increased to $50,000 in 2008.
Races between that minimum
and $75,000 are designated "O." Those at $75,000 and above but not stakes
races are designated "L." Stakes races are designated at three levels:
Grade 1 (G1), Grade 2 (G2), and Grade 3 (G3), with G1 being the best. "R"
denotes a race with entry restricted to horses meeting some criterion,
such as state of foaling. "N" denotes a stakes race not qualifying for
black type.
Early on, when blacktype
rules were being devised, there was a brief period during which allowance
races carrying a certain minimum purse were given black type. Those races
were designated as "Q" races. In the same period, fourth-place finishers
in graded races were awarded black type.
In contrast, all printed stallion registers follow what are known as "stakes rules," permitting
any added-money race, no matter how small the purse, to be counted as a
stakes race. The Showcase Stallion Directory ensures that stakes races
listed are races of genuine quality. This distinction is not made available
in stallion registers published, for example, by California Thoroughbred,
The Blood-Horse, and Thoroughbred Times.
Exception: On Showcase websites for stallions standing outside California, stakes rules are followed.
Now, here are the Showcase stallions. All stand in California except those followed by the abbreviation
for the states in which they stand. To go to a stallion's website, click on his name.
